Abstract

The relevance of this research is determined by the global need for a radical transformation in attitudes toward the environment against the backdrop of socio-economic development and the globalization of environmental problems. Around the world, efforts are being made to find optimal solutions to ecological challenges; however, the results achieved so far indicate an urgent need for profound changes. Ecologists emphasize that such transformations can only be achieved with the active participation of small communities, households, and individuals who can significantly contribute to improving the state of the environment. The relevance of this study arises from the necessity to determine to what extent the inhabitants of Zakarpattia (using local communities as an example) are capable of and willing to participate in responding to global environmental challenges. The subject of the research is the environmental awareness of residents living in Zakarpattia. The aim of the study is to examine how the inhabitants of Zakarpattia – based on the example of the villages of Dercen and Fornos of the Mukachevo territorial community – relate to environmental problems. Methods: The research was based on a systemic approach and employed methods such as analysis, synthesis, and generalization of scientific literature, comparative analysis, questionnaire surveying (personal interviews), descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and generalizing analytical methods. Research results: The study found that 73 % of respondents consider a clean environment important and take steps to protect it. A total of 91 % claim that they never intentionally litter, and nearly 71 % pay attention to energysaving practices. At the same time, only 11 % of respondents consider the chemical content of the products they purchase, and just 13 % ensure the proper disposal of hazardous waste. Based on the collected data, it can be concluded that although the population is familiar with basic environmental concepts, the practical implementation of environmental protection activities remains at an early stage. Practical significance: Firstly, the survey itself has an educational effect; secondly, the diagnostic data obtained can be used by local self-government authorities to develop waste-management and energy-efficiency programs, as well as other environmentally oriented decisions adapted to local conditions. In addition, the results may support the organization of initiatives aimed at improving environmental literacy among the population. Prospects for further research: To assess the level of environmental awareness among residents of other settlements in Zakarpattia.
